Addressing the participants of the Global Media Forum in Bonn, renowned US linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky has criticized the existing political and economic model of the United States, noting that the government has been essentially safeguarding the minority from the majority, while at the same time denying the nation access to the political system.

“Power must be in the hands of the wealth of the nation, the most responsible men, those who have sympathy for property owners, and who understand that the fundamental task of the government is to protect the minority from the majority,” Mr. Chomsky spoke about the present US system of government, quoting the George Madison speech at the constitutional convention almost two centuries ago.

Under the pretext of national security, authorities seek to expand their own power and influence. From this point of view, he bashed the PR industry for undermining the true democratic principles and criticized commercial adverts over their negative effect on the global market.

“The role of the PR industry in the elections is explicitly to undermine the school trial version of democracy, which was based on informed voters making rational decisions, now the purpose is to create uninformed voters who would make irrational decisions. And for the PR industry that is a very easy transition from their primary function. The primary function is commercial advertisement, and commercial advertising is designed to undermine markets, as markets are based on informed consumers, making rational choices,” Mr. Chomsky said.

Speaking about the international policy of the United States Noam Chomsky said, the US has monopolized the right to threaten the rest of the players and has proved to be exceedingly vindictive and irrational when its interests are at risk.

“The US is taking a huge risk of destroying the world by establishing the principle, under which the US has the right to threaten anyone with destruction, anywhere we like, but it is a unilateral right, and no one may threaten us”.

At the end of the speech, Noam Chomsky gives the conclusion of the US foreign policy. “The US must retain the right of first strike even against non-nuclear states, furthermore, nuclear weapons must always be available at the ready, because they cast the shadow over any crisis economic conflict that frightens advisories. The United States may become irrational and vindictive if their national interests are attacked”.

According to Mr. Chomsky the greatest threat to peace in the world, that US President Barack Obama constantly repeated to the press, is Iran’s nuclear program. “The only ones who think Iran’s nuclear threat is real is the US and its allies, not the rest of the world, the rest of the world regards the US as the greatest threat,” he said. Mr. Chomsky added, that the only reason the US has named Iran’s nuclear program as the threat, was only because the United States, who “has the right to threaten anyone with destruction, anywhere they like and no one may threaten us” is afraid that Iran may be the first country that would oppose this right.

Avram Noam Chomsky, the renowned 84-year-old US linguist, gained widespread attention around the world due in part to his opposition to the Vietnam War. He is among the prominent critics of globalization and is considered the intellectual father of the Occupy movement.
