Prosecutors have been ordered to unseal evidence against software developer and Internet activist Aaron Swartz, who committed suicide in January before standing trial for criminal hacking charges.
Swartz’s family asked to the documents to be released after accusing the US Department of Justice of being overzealous in seeking a 35-year prison sentence for Swartz’s breaching the MIT and JSTOR online networks.
District Judge Nathaniel Gorton ordered that names of witnesses, law enforcement personnel, and potentially compromising Internet network information be redacted from the evidence before its release.
The documents could be made public by next month, as attorneys have until May 27 to negotiate the exact wording of the judge’s order.
