In the period between 1945 and 49, the US was an unrivaled global military power due to its monopoly on the A-bomb. Now it is after a monopoly on a different super weapon, which it hopes will re-equip its proverbial Big Stick with an ability to easily trump any diplomacy in showing who is the boss.
Dr Viktor Litovkin is a Moscow-based defense analyst:
“Nukes are to be soon supplemented with equally crippling non-nuclear weapons. Destroying an armada of tanks or planes is not the only option to disable it. There are other means including radiological and electronic weapons aided by precise reconnaissance, navigation and target acquisition. There is also the mighty military laser”.
Indeed, as early as in 2014 many of the American warships deployed to the Persian Gulf will carry a powerful laser gun capable of destroying enemy speedboats and drones. Within a few years, this gun is to be followed by an even more powerful one, capable of shooting down supersonic jets and destroying incoming missiles.
Washington apparently hopes that with an unparalleled arsenal of military lasers in hands the US can retain its position as a global superpower that possesses sufficient force to orchestrate the geopolitical behavior of numerous satellites around the world.
Russia argues that this pursuit is counterproductive and wrong. As far back as ten years ago, former Russian Prime Minister Yevgeni Primakov pointed out that the era of superpowers extending nuclear umbrellas over their satellites was well and truly over. An era of world powers set in instead, that build up their global influence by developing networks of mutually beneficial partnerships in all parts of the globe.
