Report: Anti-Semitic sentiments in Russia fell against Islamophobia

The level of anti-Semitic crimes in Russia for the last two years is low amid growing Islamophobia, according to the report of the expert group of the Jewish community in Russia “Anti-Semitism in Russia (2011-2012 years) presented in Moscow on Friday .”

“In the two years in question anti-Semitic offenses in Russia remained relatively low level.

As one of the reasons for the apparent drop in the level of anti-Semitic sentiment in the Russian society the report names the transfer of xenophobic aversion from Jews to the Caucasus and Central Asia “, – said in a report to the press release.

According to experts, in two years in Russia recorded five attacks, one offense and 38 cases of anti-Semitic vandalism, reports RIA “Novosti”.

While in France, according to the report, only in 2012 were recorded 177 cases of violence and vandalism against Jews and Jewish property, and in the UK in the same year was awarded 69 violent attacks motivated by anti-Semitism, 53 cases of damage and desecration of Jewish property .

“Means taken by the government against xenophobic behavior have shown  certain results. We know that the Russian society to listen to authorities,” – said in a presentation EAJC Secretary General, Vice-President of the Federal Jewish National and Cultural Autonomy Michael Members.

The report said that in contrast to many European countries to Russia almost non existence  is the so-called “new anti-Semitism”, which is based on aggressive rejection of Israel and its policies.

“In particular, it is explained by the fact that Islamophobia has arisen in recent years and has caused a growing interest in Israel as a fighter against the aggressive Islamism” – the report said.

The expert group was set up some years ago with the support of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC), it includes, in particular, public figures, historians, ethnologists.

Presentation was held in the House of Nationalities, such research is carried out on annually base.
