Russian people are happier with their lives than ever before. This is the conclusion of the All-Russian Centre of Public Opinion Studies. This mass optimism looks especially astonishing against the background of rapidly growing prices.
Who lives well in Russia? Experts of the All-Russian Centre of Public Opinion Studies have found the answer to this question. According to the results of their survey, Russian people are going through a period of the highest social well-being in the entire span of public enquiries. The index of Russian people’s satisfaction with their life has reached 60 points, which is the absolute record, General Director of the All-Russian Centre of Public Opinion Studies Valery Fyodorov said in his interview with The Voice of Russia.
“The period from the beginning of 2012 to the beginning of 2013 is the time span when we registered the highest rates of Russian people’s satisfaction with their life over the previous eight years. This does not mean that everyone is happy and has nothing to wish for. Unhappy people can be found at any time and there are a lot of them at present as well. However, this year the ratio, the prevalence of positive responses over negative ones became the highest over the last eight years.”
According to psychologists, a happy society is first and foremost a sign of the country’s financial and economic stability because poverty has a negative impact on people’s ability to set priorities and gives rise to general discontent and depressed moods. The survey of the All-Russian Centre of Public Opinion Studies confirms this information: at present Russians are demonstrating more confidence in their financial stability. Curiously, this is not associated with higher incomes or lower prices. Last year did not cancel inflation which grew by almost 6.5%. The cost of the minimum monthly food basket reached 2,600 roubles on average, which is an over 7% annual increase. Still, Valery Fyodorov says that all the grumbling that everything is bad does not relate to the objective survey results that testify to the contrary.
Five years ago the situation was absolutely different, Valery Fyodorov continues.
“The worst period was between the end of 2008 and 2009 which was certainly caused by the world crisis, a wave of unemployment, full incomprehension and low incomes.”
In addition to current satisfaction with their life Russians have also become happier. What is the basis of happiness? Everyone has their own answer to this question. The survey carried out by the All-Russian Center of Public Opinion Studies shows that Russian people’s feeling of happiness first of all depends on family prosperity. One third of respondents find joy in their children and grandchildren, about 25% are happy to have a partner and enjoy good health, 9% are happy with their jobs providing personal fulfillment. On the whole, 80% of Russians call themselves happy people. We can see that today happiness is not measured with money but with priceless values.
