It’s true, nowadays the U.S. is not being looked at as favorably as in the past in Russia.
Not only Russia, by the way.
Wanting to provide a simple explanation, one would cite a common formula like: “They hate us, because we in the U.S. are so free, and they’re not”.
The reality is more complicated though. Obviously, each society has it’s own reasons for sympathy or antipathy.
In Russia people are more aware about the history of it’s country, especially if it is concerning their security.
Cold war, and especially WWII is much more a factor influencing Russia’s politics even today, than in U.S.
The reason is, because Russia paid the highest price of all allies who helped to defeat Hitlers Nazis armies. Eighty percent of all armed assault in WWII was absorbed by Soviet Union, and out of over 50 Millions killed in WWII over 25 Millions were citizens of former Soviet Union.
Similar to the Jewish population concerns in regards to genocide, Russia too suffered multiple attacks from the West and is very much perceiving the encirclement by the NATO as a threat to it’s security. Especially because it was promised, that NATO would not expand towards it’s borders.
NATO is developing now a missile defense shield allegedly against Iran.
Russia suggested to develop a common defense system, which was rejected.
When requesting a written guaranty, that the missile defense shield is not directed against Russia, NATO rejected it as well, and instead keeps on assuring that the shield is against Iran only.
If one wants to dig even deeper, it will suffice to watch the history documentary by Oliver Stone “Americas History Never Told”, which was aired in main stream media in U.S recently, or to read the book by Edwin Black “Nazinexus”.
It may surprise the American public what they will learn about their own governments policies in the WWII era and later, but for many nations, Russia included, it’s not, since they were part of the game and have very much a reason to mistrust the foreign policies of the U.S. administrations.
In U.S. the term “Political Correctness” is central in public communication. One may call it “Avoid the Truth the Public is not Aware of, to Keep Things as they are”.
So it comes, that many deeds of the U.S., like the war in Iraq, was explained to the public by a lie in order to hide some thing.
My understanding is, that if a democratic government is hiding from it’s own population material policies and it’s motivations, than some thing is wrong with the democracy it self.
At some point the nation should reject political correctness, so it can start to direct it’s destiny it self again.
