FORMER ACTING CIA<\/u>\u00a0Director Michael Morell said in an interview Monday<\/a>that U.S. policy\u00a0in Syria should be to make Iran and Russia \u201cpay a price\u201d by arming local groups and instructing them to kill Iranian and Russian personnel in the country.<\/p>\n

Morell was appearing on the Charlie Rose show on PBS in the wake of hispublicly endorsing<\/a> Hillary Clinton on the New York Times<\/em>\u00a0opinion pages.<\/p>\n

Clinton has expressed support for increased military intervention in Syria against Bashar al-Assad\u2019s Syrian government. Iran and Russia are backing Assad.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat they need is to have the Russians and Iranians pay a little price,\u201d Morell said. \u201cWhen we were in Iraq, the Iranians were giving weapons to the Shia militia, who were killing American soldiers, right? The Iranians were making us pay a price. We need to make the Iranians pay a price in Syria. We need to make the Russians pay a price.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morell said the killing of Russians and Iranians should be undertaken \u201ccovertly, so you don\u2019t tell the world about it, you don\u2019t stand up at the Pentagon and say \u2018we did this.\u2019 But you make sure they know it in Moscow and Tehran.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morell\u00a0also proposed\u00a0that U.S. forces begin bombing Syrian government installations, including government offices, aircraft and presidential guard positions. The former acting CIA director\u00a0said that he wanted to \u201cscare Assad.\u201d Morell clarified that he wasn\u2019t actually calling for Assad\u2019s assassination.<\/p>\n

He compared his proposal to American support for groups that targeted Russian forces in Afghanistan during the 1980\u2019s \u2014 efforts that later helped incubate al Qaeda.\u00a0He seemed unconcerned about\u00a0how other parties might respond to such actions, beyond speculating that they might provide leverage for future negotiations.<\/p>\n

If put into effect, Morell\u2019s plans\u00a0would entail a massive escalation of American covert military involvement in Syria that\u00a0would bring the United States much closer to\u00a0direct confrontation with Russia and Iran.<\/p>\n

Morell\u2019s endorsement of Clinton was quickly seen as a sign that he was interested in a role in a possible Clinton administration. He wrote that Clinton would be a \u201chighly qualified commander in chief\u201d and a \u201cstrong proponent of a more aggressive approach\u201d to the conflict in Syria.<\/p>\n

Morell told Rose that he had not discussed his proposal to kill\u00a0Russian and Iranian personnel in Syria with Clinton, though he believed she was supportive of efforts\u00a0to gain \u201cdiplomatic leverage.\u201d<\/p>\n

After\u00a0leaving the CIA in 2013, Morell authored a memoir entitled \u201cThe Great War of Our Time.\u201d The book was widely criticized for\u00a0defending\u00a0detainee torture<\/a> in the post-9\/11 era.\u00a0Morell was also a\u00a0co-author of a \u201crebuttal\u201d to the Senate Intelligence Committee torture report.<\/p>\n

Last week, CBS\u00a0announced<\/a> that Morell had left his role as a network news analyst so that he could begin publicly supporting Clinton\u2019s run. During his interview with Rose, Morell continued to heap praise on Clinton\u2019s perspective on U.S. relations with Syria, Russia and Iran.<\/p>\n
