He was born in <a title=\"Budapest\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Budapest\">Budapest<\/a>, <a title=\"Hungary\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hungary\">Hungary<\/a> to Jewish parents who survived the <a title=\"The Holocaust\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Holocaust\">Holocaust<\/a>. His family fled Hungary when he was a child to escape the Communist regime, settling first in a camp for displaced persons in Austria and then immigrating to the <a title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\">United States<\/a>, where he attended public schools in <a title=\"New York City\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\">New York City<\/a>, and was an early designer of computerized war games. Friedman describes his family\u2019s story as \u201ca very classic story of refugees making a new life in America.&#8221; He received a B.A. at the <a title=\"City College of New York\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/City_College_of_New_York\">City College of New York<\/a>, where he majored in political science, and a <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Ph.D.\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ph.D.\">Ph.D.<\/a> in <a title=\"Government\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Government\">government<\/a> at <a title=\"Cornell University\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cornell_University\">Cornell University<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-smith_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Friedman#cite_note-smith-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r0ZxbT_qa38\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Prior to joining the private sector, Friedman spent almost twenty years in academia, teaching political science at <a title=\"Dickinson College\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dickinson_College\">Dickinson College<\/a>. During this time, he also regularly briefed senior commanders in the armed services as well as the Office of Net Assessments, <a title=\"Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supreme_Headquarters_Allied_Powers_Europe\">SHAPE<\/a> Technical Center, the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"U.S. Army War College\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/U.S._Army_War_College\">U.S. Army War College<\/a>, National Defense University and the <a title=\"RAND Corporation\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RAND_Corporation\">RAND Corporation<\/a>, on security and national defense matters.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Friedman#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Friedman pursued <a title=\"Political philosophy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Political_philosophy\">political philosophy<\/a> with his early work focusing on <a title=\"Marxism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marxism\">Marxism<\/a>, as well as <a title=\"International\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International\">international<\/a> conflict, including examination of the <a title=\"Soviet Union\u2013United States relations\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soviet_Union%E2%80%93United_States_relations\">U.S.-Soviet relationship<\/a> from a military perspective. After the<a title=\"Dissolution of the Soviet Union\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dissolution_of_the_Soviet_Union\">collapse of the Soviet Union<\/a>, Friedman studied potential for a U.S.-Japan conflict and co-authored <i>The Coming War with Japan<\/i> in 1991. He is also the author or co-author of books examining topics as diverse as the <a title=\"Frankfurt School\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frankfurt_School\">Frankfurt School<\/a> and warfare, including <i>The Future of War<\/i>, <i>The Next Hundred Years<\/i>, <i>The Intelligence Edge<\/i>, and <i>America\u2019s Secret War<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1996, he founded <a title=\"Stratfor\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stratfor\">STRATFOR<\/a>, a private intelligence and forecasting company, and has served as the company&#8217;s CEO and Chief Intelligence Officer.
