Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has amazed the world with his knowledge of history: in his interview with the German TV channel ARD, the politician said that “all of us still clearly remember the Soviet invasion into Ukraine and Germany,” referring to the Second World War.<\/strong><\/p>\n

MOSCOW, January 9 (Sputnik) \u2013 Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has demonstrated his knowledge of\u00a0history to\u00a0the world.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, while on\u00a0an official visit to\u00a0Berlin, the bespectacled young politician was interviewed live by\u00a0the German TV channel ARD, where he claimed that the USSR had kicked off\u00a0the Second World War by\u00a0invading Germany.<\/p>\n

“All of\u00a0us still clearly remember the Soviet invasion of\u00a0Ukraine and Germany,” he said. “We need to\u00a0avoid it.”<\/p>\n

“Nobody has the right to\u00a0rewrite the results of\u00a0the Second World War,” he added. “Russia’s President Putin is trying to\u00a0do exactly this.”<\/p>\n

Yatsenyuk, however, did not clarify what particular results of\u00a0the Second World War President Putin is trying to\u00a0rewrite. The TV host seemed uninterested in\u00a0pursuing the matter.<\/p>\n

Prior to\u00a0the Second World War, most of\u00a0Ukraine, including Kiev, was part of\u00a0the USSR although what was to\u00a0become western Ukraine was split between\u00a0Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Romania.<\/p>\n

In September of\u00a01939, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union split Poland and entered into\u00a0other countries which had been established in\u00a0the wake of\u00a0the First World War.<\/p>\n

Although several independent Ukrainian states had existed briefly following\u00a0the collapse of\u00a0the Russian Empire, these were short-lived and had been subsumed into\u00a0Poland and the Soviet Union by\u00a01921.<\/p>\n

And of\u00a0course, it was Nazi Germany which invaded the Soviet Union on\u00a0June 22, 1941 under\u00a0the codename Operation Barbarossa. Soviet troops eventually did take Berlin in\u00a0May of\u00a01945, after\u00a0a grueling conflict which had cost the USSR over\u00a022 million lives.<\/p>\n

The TV host seemed not to\u00a0be aware of\u00a0the Prime Minister’s historical gaffe.<\/p>\n

The prime minister\u2019s remarks have already been criticized by\u00a0Russia.<\/p>\n

In his Twitter, the head of\u00a0Russia\u2019s parliamentary committee on\u00a0international affairs Aleksei Pushkov made the following\u00a0comment:<\/p>\n

“Yatsenyuk has finally gone off\u00a0his rocker. After his statement regarding ‘the Soviet invasion into\u00a0Germany and Ukraine’ during\u00a0the Second World War, one can\u2019t take him seriously.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
