\u201cThe world is facing the prospect of major war, perhaps nuclear war – with the United States determined to isolate and provoke Russia and eventually China. This truth is being turned [\u2026] inside out by journalists, including those who promoted the lies that led to the bloodbath in Iraq in 2003.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

This stark warning was delivered by\u00a0the renowned British author and journalist John Pilger at\u00a0the Logan symposium in\u00a0London which brought together prominent investigative journalists and media freedom activists gathered in\u00a0London to\u00a0challenge the narrative propagated by\u00a0Washington. The symposium was held a day after\u00a0the US House of\u00a0Representatives adopted Resolution 758 which was immediately dubbed by\u00a0observers a \u201cgreen light\u201d to\u00a0a new cold, or even \u201chot\u201d, war on\u00a0Russia. Below are some excerpts from\u00a0John Pilger\u2019s address.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe times we live in\u00a0are so dangerous and so distorted in\u00a0public perception that propaganda is no longer, as\u00a0Edward Bernays called it, an “invisible government”. It is the government. It rules directly without\u00a0fear of\u00a0contradiction and its principal aim is the conquest of\u00a0us: our sense of\u00a0the world, our ability to\u00a0separate truth from\u00a0lies.<\/p>\n

Diversion By Media<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe information age is actually a media age. We have war by\u00a0media; censorship by\u00a0media; demonology by\u00a0media; retribution by\u00a0media; diversion by\u00a0media\u00a0\u2014 a surreal assembly line of\u00a0obedient clich\u00e9s and false assumptions.<\/p>\n

\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the wake of\u00a0the Cold War, the fabrication of\u00a0new \u2018threats\u2019 completed the political disorientation of\u00a0those who, 20 years earlier, would have formed a vehement opposition.<\/p>\n

\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most effective propaganda is found not in\u00a0the Sun or on\u00a0Fox News\u00a0\u2014 but\u00a0beneath a liberal halo. When the New York Times published claims that Saddam Hussein had weapons of\u00a0mass destruction, its fake evidence was believed, because it wasn’t Fox News; it was the New York Times.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe same is true of\u00a0the Washington Post and the Guardian, both of\u00a0which have played a critical role in\u00a0conditioning their readers to\u00a0accept a new and dangerous cold war. All three liberal newspapers have misrepresented events in\u00a0Ukraine as\u00a0a malign act by\u00a0Russia\u00a0\u2014 when, in\u00a0fact, the fascist-led coup in\u00a0Ukraine was the work of\u00a0the United States, aided by\u00a0Germany and Nato.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis inversion of\u00a0reality is so pervasive that Washington’s military encirclement and intimidation of\u00a0Russia is not contentious. It’s not even news, but\u00a0suppressed behind\u00a0a smear and scare campaign of\u00a0the kind I grew up\u00a0with during\u00a0the first cold war.<\/p>\n

Blackout on\u00a0Truth<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cOnce again, the evil empire is coming to\u00a0get us, led by\u00a0another Stalin or, perversely, a new Hitler. Name your demon and let rip.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe suppression of\u00a0the truth about\u00a0Ukraine is one of\u00a0the most complete news blackouts I can remember. The biggest Western military build-up in\u00a0the Caucasus and eastern Europe since\u00a0WWII is blacked out. Washington’s secret aid to\u00a0Kiev and its neo-Nazi brigades responsible for\u00a0war crimes against\u00a0the population of\u00a0eastern Ukraine is blacked out. Evidence that contradicts propaganda that Russia was responsible for\u00a0the shooting down\u00a0of a Malaysian airliner is blacked out.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd again, supposedly liberal media are the censors. Citing no facts, no evidence, one journalist identified a pro-Russian leader in\u00a0Ukraine as\u00a0the man who shot down\u00a0the airliner. This man, he wrote, was known as\u00a0The Demon. He was a scary man who frightened the journalist. That was the evidence.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany in\u00a0the western media haves worked hard to\u00a0present the ethnic Russian population of\u00a0Ukraine as\u00a0outsiders in\u00a0their own country, almost never as\u00a0Ukrainians seeking a federation within\u00a0Ukraine and as\u00a0Ukrainian citizens resisting a foreign-orchestrated coup against\u00a0their elected government.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the Russian president has to\u00a0say is of\u00a0no consequence; he is a pantomime villain who can be abused with\u00a0impunity. An American general who heads Nato and is straight out\u00a0of Dr. Strangelove\u00a0\u2014 one General Breedlove\u00a0\u2014 routinely claims Russian invasions without\u00a0a shred of\u00a0visual evidence. His impersonation of\u00a0Stanley Kubrick’s General Jack D. Ripper is pitch perfect.<\/p>\n

“Let’s Get Ready for\u00a0War with\u00a0Russia”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cForty thousand Ruskies were massing on\u00a0the border, according to\u00a0Breedlove. That was good enough for\u00a0the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Observer\u00a0\u2014 the latter having previously distinguished itself with\u00a0lies and fabrications that backed Blair’s invasion of\u00a0Iraq, as\u00a0its former reporter, David Rose, revealed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is almost the joi d’esprit of\u00a0a class reunion. The drum-beaters of\u00a0the Washington Post are the very same editorial writers who declared the existence of\u00a0Saddam’s weapons of\u00a0mass destruction to\u00a0be “hard facts”.<\/p>\n

“If you wonder,” wrote Robert Parry, “how the world could stumble into\u00a0WWIII\u00a0\u2014 much as\u00a0it did into\u00a0WWI a century ago\u00a0\u2014 all you need to\u00a0do is look at\u00a0the madness that has enveloped virtually the entire US political\/media structure over\u00a0Ukraine where a false narrative of\u00a0white hats versus black hats took hold early and has proved impervious to\u00a0facts or reason.”<\/p>\n

\u201cParry, the journalist who revealed Iran-Contra, is one of\u00a0the few who investigate the central role of\u00a0the media in\u00a0this “game of\u00a0chicken”, as\u00a0the Russian foreign minister called it. But is it a game? As I write this, the US Congress votes on\u00a0Resolution 758 which, in\u00a0a nutshell, says: \u2018Let’s get ready for\u00a0war with\u00a0Russia\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the 19th century, the writer Alexander Herzen described secular liberalism as \u2018the final religion, though its church is not of\u00a0the other world but\u00a0of this\u2019. Today, this divine right is far more violent and dangerous than\u00a0anything the Muslim world throws up, though perhaps its greatest triumph is the illusion of\u00a0free and open information.\u201d<\/p>\n
