Canada<\/span>, thus<\/span> becoming the first<\/span> offshore<\/span> renminbi<\/span> hub for<\/span> North America<\/span>, and the volume of trade between<\/span> Canada and China<\/span> could soon<\/span> double or even triple<\/span>, thereby reducing the need for<\/span> dollars<\/span>.<\/p>\n

But that’s not<\/span> the most dangerous<\/span> news for<\/span> petrodollar<\/span> this week.<\/span> China has also<\/span> signed an agreement<\/span> with Qatar<\/span> on direct<\/span> currency swaps<\/span> between the two countries<\/span> with the use<\/span> of the yuan.<\/span><\/p>\n

The era of<\/span> petrodollar<\/span>
\nUntil<\/span> the twentieth<\/span> century,<\/span> the value of money<\/span> was tied<\/span> to gold.<\/span><\/p>\n

Banks<\/span> were limited to<\/span> their<\/span> gold reserves<\/span>, so credit growth<\/span> had<\/span> its limits.<\/span><\/p>\n

But<\/span> in 1944<\/span> was created<\/span> the Bretton Woods system<\/span>, which initiated the system of<\/span> exchange rates.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the framework<\/span> of the Bretton Woods<\/span> system of<\/span> exchange rates<\/span> of all currencies<\/span> were<\/span> pegged to the dollar<\/span>, and the dollar in turn<\/span> –<\/span> to gold.<\/span> To prevent<\/span> speculation<\/span> pegged<\/span> currency<\/span> capital movement<\/span> was<\/span> severely limited.<\/span> This system<\/span> for two decades<\/span> accompanied by rapid<\/span> economic growth and<\/span> help<\/span> avoid<\/span> any major<\/span> financial crises.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in the end<\/span> it showed<\/span> its inability to<\/span> cope<\/span> with the growing<\/span> economic power<\/span> of Germany and Japan<\/span>, as well as the reluctance<\/span> of America<\/span> to adjust their<\/span> domestic economic policies<\/span> while maintaining<\/span> linkage<\/span> to gold.<\/span> President Nixon<\/span> overturned the<\/span> link<\/span> to gold<\/span> in 1971<\/span>, and the system of fixed exchange rates<\/span> collapsed.<\/span><\/p>\n

At that moment,<\/span> the dollar<\/span> experienced a period of<\/span> a collapse<\/span>, as oil played a<\/span> crucial role in<\/span> its support.<\/span> Nixon<\/span> held talks<\/span> with Saudi Arabia<\/span>, and that, in exchange for weapons<\/span> and<\/span> defense<\/span>, has agreed to sell oil<\/span> only<\/span> in US dollars.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other<\/span> OPEC members<\/span> have supported<\/span> this system<\/span>, providing a perpetual<\/span> global demand<\/span> for the US currency<\/span>. And<\/span> petrodollar<\/span> dominance<\/span> continues to this day<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The fact that<\/span> China has started<\/span> thus<\/span> interact<\/span> with the OPEC countries<\/span>, says<\/span> that<\/span> he beats<\/span> in<\/span> the heart of<\/span> petrodollar<\/span> system.<\/span> And the<\/span> recent<\/span> strikes are<\/span> more and<\/span> stronger.<\/span><\/p>\n

And this is<\/span> exactly what the<\/span> government<\/span> of Canada<\/span> sought<\/span>. In particular,<\/span> Stephen Harper<\/span> would like to<\/span> increase the number<\/span> of small and medium<\/span> businesses working<\/span> with China<\/span> by selling<\/span> goods and services<\/span> there<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The volume of<\/span> the swap<\/span> agreement<\/span> between China and Canada<\/span> is<\/span> 200 billion<\/span> yuan.<\/span> Currency<\/span> countries<\/span> will be used<\/span> not only in<\/span> trade but also<\/span> in the implementation of<\/span> the investment.<\/span><\/p>\n

And it’s<\/span> just two weeks<\/span> after the<\/span> leading financial centers<\/span> of Asia<\/span> – Singapore –<\/span> became the main center<\/span> for<\/span> the yuan<\/span> in the region<\/span>, as was possible to establish<\/span> a direct<\/span> conversion<\/span> between the<\/span> Singapore dollar<\/span> and<\/span> the yuan<\/span>.<\/p>\n

And<\/span> it all<\/span> fits into the framework<\/span> of the current trend<\/span>. Yuan<\/span> quickly<\/span> spread around the world<\/span> as a currency<\/span> for<\/span> trade, investment and<\/span> even<\/span> savings.<\/span><\/p>\n

RMB<\/span> deposits<\/span> in South Korea<\/span> increased<\/span> 55 times<\/span> in one year,<\/span> and<\/span> it’s<\/span> stunning<\/span> growth<\/span>.<\/p>\n

You can also<\/span> recall that<\/span> the British government<\/span> was the first<\/span> foreign government<\/span> plans to issue<\/span> debt securities denominated<\/span> in RMB<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Even the<\/span> European Central Bank<\/span> is discussing<\/span> the possibility of including<\/span> the RMB<\/span> in<\/span> their<\/span> official reserves<\/span>, while<\/span> politicians<\/span> worldwide<\/span> louder<\/span> say they<\/span> need a new<\/span> monetary system<\/span>, which will not be<\/span> based<\/span> on the dollar.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course,<\/span> as soon as<\/span> the dollar<\/span> is unlikely to<\/span> feel the effects<\/span> of these actions<\/span>, but in the long term<\/span> trend<\/span> is obvious: the<\/span> rest of the world<\/span> does not want<\/span> to rely on the<\/span> US dollar<\/span>, and<\/span> they create<\/span> a new reality<\/span>, this<\/span> America<\/span> wants to<\/span> or not.<\/span><\/p>\n

Petrodollar<\/span> system<\/span> is the<\/span> heart and soul of<\/span> America’s<\/span> dominance<\/span> over the<\/span> global financial system and<\/span> guarantee<\/span> the stability<\/span> of the dollar.<\/span> All countries need to<\/span> buy dollars<\/span> to be able to<\/span> buy oil<\/span> on the open market<\/span>.<\/p>\n

But<\/span> on November 3<\/span>, China has signed currency swap<\/span> agreement<\/span> with Qatar<\/span>. The agreement<\/span> between the two countries<\/span> at<\/span> the equivalent of $<\/span> 5.7 billion<\/span>, will be valid<\/span> for three years,<\/span> and<\/span> Qatar<\/span> became the<\/span> 24th<\/span> country to<\/span> open its market<\/span> for<\/span> the Chinese currency<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Apparently, the<\/span> oil producing countries<\/span> in the Middle East<\/span> all the<\/span> more difficult<\/span> to trust the<\/span> US dollar<\/span>, so we can expect<\/span> that by the<\/span> exchange agreement<\/span> with China<\/span> and<\/span> other countries to<\/span> join<\/span> OPEC.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now<\/span> almost every week,<\/span> China<\/span>, Russia<\/span> or<\/span> one of<\/span> the BRICS countries<\/span> enter into agreements<\/span> that replace<\/span> the old system of<\/span> trade.<\/span> And many countries<\/span> are moving away<\/span> from the dollar<\/span> due to<\/span> export<\/span> inflation.<\/span> Therefore,<\/span> the Chinese yuan<\/span> is becoming<\/span> a more viable option<\/span>, especially now that the<\/span> strength<\/span> of the economy<\/span> of Asia<\/span> is growing rapidly.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
