{"id":5068,"date":"2014-08-25T12:01:18","date_gmt":"2014-08-25T18:01:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/myfutureamerica.org\/?p=5068"},"modified":"2014-08-25T13:20:53","modified_gmt":"2014-08-25T19:20:53","slug":"china-may-unveil-homegrown-os-rivals-to-windows-google-and-apple","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/myfutureamerica.org\/?p=5068","title":{"rendered":"China may unveil homegrown OS rivals to Windows, Google and Apple"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Following revelations of America\u2019s National Security Agency\u2019s global internet surveillance system, combined with a desire to enhance domestic production, China is beating a path towards unveiling its own operating systems in October.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">The Chinese-made substitutes would first be introduced on desktop devices, later expanding to include smartphones and other hand-held devices, Ni Guangnan heads an official operating system development alliance established in March, Xinhau reported at the weekend.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #044faa;\" href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/news\/178376-china-ban-apple-ipad\/\" target=\"_blank\">China bans government purchases of Apple gadgets &#8211; report<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>\u201cWe hope to launch a Chinese-made desktop operating system by October supporting app stores,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Ni told the trade paper.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">China, naturally concerned about the state of its\u00a0<a style=\"color: #044faa;\" href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/news\/huawei-nsa-spy-china-621\/\" target=\"_blank\">national security<\/a>\u00a0following the leaks by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, which showed that many US tech products were vulnerable to<em>\u201cback door\u201d<\/em>\u00a0peeks on private information, aims to reduce the country\u2019s reliance on well-known imported brands, including Windows, Google and Apple.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>\u201cThe recent NSA spying scandal has intensified Beijing\u2019s concerns about its national information security in the era of an interconnected world, in which a limited number of U.S. giants in the hardware and software industries have dominated the market for decades,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Jin Kai, assistant professor at Daejin University in South Korea, wrote in The Diplomat, a website covering the Asia-Pacific region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Meanwhile, it should be mentioned that the US Justice Department in May issued a 31-count indictment against five Chinese military personnel for hacking into the computers of several American corporations in the hunt for industrial secrets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Beijing\u2019s move toward domestic production of operating systems (OS) anticipated China\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #044faa;\" href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/news\/178376-china-ban-apple-ipad\/\" target=\"_blank\">decision<\/a>in May to ban Windows 8, Microsoft\u2019s latest operating system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">The announcement is a double whammy for the US technology powerhouse company, which is currently\u00a0<a style=\"color: #044faa;\" href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/news\/182644-china-windows-apple-systems\/%20http:\/\/rt.com\/business\/176420-microsoft-china-probe-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\">under investigation<\/a>\u00a0by Chinese authorities for antitrust violations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Google, meanwhile, has also not escaped the hazards of doing business in the world\u2019s most populated country. In March last year, Beijing said the world\u2019s most famous search engine company enjoyed excessive influence over China&#8217;s smartphone industry via its Android mobile operating system. It also ruled that Google discriminated against some local firms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">However, China, which hopes to free itself from the chains of US technology giants in an interconnected world, still has many kinks to work out before it achieves its OS objectives. One problem for China, a country notorious for making products that are part imitation, part innovation, involves developing its own operating system that does not invite claims of copyright invasion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>&#8220;China has more than a dozen mobile OS developers with no independent intellectual property rights because their research is based on Android (the mobile operating system from Google),&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0said Ni, who would like to see the government oversee the ambitious project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">In any case, Ni believes competition will help Chinese developers achieve their goals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>&#8220;Our key to success lies in an environment that can help us compete with Google, Apple and Microsoft,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0said Ni.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/news\/182644-china-windows-apple-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\">RT<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Following revelations of America\u2019s National Security Agency\u2019s global internet surveillance system, combined with a desire to enhance domestic production, China is beating a path towards unveiling its own operating systems in October.
