{"id":4347,"date":"2014-04-05T12:36:01","date_gmt":"2014-04-05T18:36:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/myfutureamerica.org\/?p=4347"},"modified":"2014-04-05T12:36:01","modified_gmt":"2014-04-05T18:36:01","slug":"us-slams-europes-plan-to-build-anti-snooping-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/myfutureamerica.org\/?p=4347","title":{"rendered":"US slams Europe\u2019s plan to build anti-snooping system"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page-title\">\n<h1 itemprop=\"name\">\u00a0<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"white-border-caption\">\n<div class=\"caption-img\">\n<div class=\"img-copyright\">\n<p>\u00a9 Collage: \u00abVoice of Russia\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>US officials on Friday blasted plans to construct an EU-centric communication system, designed to prevent emails and phone calls from being tapped by the NSA, warning that such a move is a violation of trade laws.Calling Europe\u2019s proposal to build its own integrated communication system <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u201cdraconian,\u201d<\/span> the office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) said American tech companies, which are worth an estimated $8 trillion per year, would take a financial hit if Brussels gives the initiative the green light.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"diff-text-block\">\n<p id=\"p_10\">European countries \u2013 notably Germany and France &#8211; are desperate to get a handle on their own networks without relying on a meddlesome middleman in the aftermath of Edward Snowden\u2019s whistle-blowing activities at the National Security Agency, which proved that much of the world\u2019s telecommunication meta-data is being stored away in the United States.<\/p>\n<p id=\"p_20\">Germany\u2019s outrage over the revelations hit full stride last month when <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Der Spiegel<\/span>, the popular daily newspaper, asked if it is <span style=\"font-style: normal;\">time for the country to open a formal espionage investigation following yet more disclosures that Britain&#8217;s GCHQ infiltrated German internet companies and the NSA collected information about German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a special database.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"p_30\">Now, US trade officials are up in arms over proposals by Germany&#8217;s Deutsche Telekom (in which the German government owns less than 30 percent), to avoid passing communications to the United States, saying the move would give European companies an unfair advantage over their US colleagues.<\/p>\n<p id=\"p_40\">If the European-centric plan gets the go ahead, it would require the dismantlement of the Safe Harbor agreement that allows US companies access to European data.
