The fact that Russian journalists were barred from EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton\u2019s press conference in Kiev on January 29 contradicts the principles of freedom of the press advocated by the EU, the Russian Foreign Ministry\u2019s official spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Earlier, a spokesman for the EU delegation to Ukraine, David Stulik, said that access to Ashton\u2019s briefing had been by invitation in a limited format. Asked what criteria had used to select journalists, he said that journalists had been invited “at our own discretion”.<\/p>\n

Lukashevich dismissed as dissatisfactory the explanations received from Catherine Ashton\u2019s press secretary through diplomatic channels that the absence of Russian journalists at the briefing had had to do to logistics and security difficulties which required only a certain number of attendees.<\/p>\n

“The explanations by Ashton’s press secretary obtained via diplomatic channels that the absence of Russian journalists at her briefing was due merely to the difficulties in terms of logistics and security, which allowed them to organize the presence of only a certain number of reporters at the event, can hardly be considered satisfactory,” Russian Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a commentary posted on the ministry’s website on Monday.<\/p>\n

“A situation when the Russian public is deprived of the opportunity to get firs-hand information about EU assessments of current developments in Ukraine poorly fits into the principles of freedom of the press strongly advocated by the EU,” the Russian diplomat said.<\/p>\n
