But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had ordered the matter examined and that “there are things that must not be done” between allies.

Glenn Greenwald, who as a writer for Britain’s Guardian met face-to-face with the fugitive Snowden and has written or co-authored many of the newspaper’s stories based on his material, was asked in an Israeli television interview whether the ex-contractor had more secrets to tell that related to Israel.

“Yes. I don’t want to preview any stories that aren’t yet published, but it is definitely the case that there are a huge number of very significant stories that are left to report,” said the Brazil-based Greenwald, speaking to Channel Ten TV by video link.

Read more: –We have lots of unpublished stories on how NSA is abusing its powers – Greenwald

“We have only had these documents for seven months, which, given their volume and complexity, is not a very long time. There definitely are stories left that involve the Middle East, that involve Israel. The reporting is going to continue at roughly the same pace that has been happening.”

Last month, several Israeli cabinet members and lawmakers said news of US spying on Israel was an opportunity to press Washington to free jailed Israeli agent Jonathan Pollard.

Pollard, a former US Navy intelligence analyst, was sentenced to a life term in 1987 in the United States for spying for Israel. A succession of US presidents has spurned Israeli calls for his pardon.

In what appeared to be a bid to calm the clamor, Netanyahu said Israel constantly sought Pollard’s release and did not need a “special occasion” to discuss his case with Washington.

Greenwald voiced understanding for the Pollard linkage.

“I think you are absolutely right to contrast the Jonathan Pollard case with revelations of American spying on their closest allies within the Israeli government, because it does underlie, underscore exactly the hypocrisy that lies at the center of so much of what the U.S. government does,” he said.

Greenwald mocks US, UK media as slaves of gov’t, calls for Snowden asylum

The ex-Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald, who first published the leaks by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, sharply criticized American and British media for acting like government spokespeople and urged hackers to resist authorities’ intimidation.

Speaking via video link from Brazil to the Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg, Greenwald denounced the US government for charging Edward Snowden with espionage and said the threat of life in jail was “an effective tactic” to ward off other potential leakers.

He mocked the bravery of journalists and media figures willing to go over and beyond to bash Edward Snowden but not dare take on the government with the same ire. Greenwald argued that the media establishment at large is guilty of failing of keeping governments in check.

Read more: –Leaked: GCHQ and NSA spy on Unicef, Israeli PM, EU chief

When Greenwald and his colleagues began working with Snowden, he said they realized that they’d have to act in a way that wasn’t on par with how the mainstream media has acted up until now.

“We knew in particular that one of our most formidable adversaries was not simply going to be the intelligence agencies on which we were reporting and who we were trying to expose, but also their most loyal, devoted servants, which calls itself the United States and British media.”

Greenwald said, “Their role is not to be adversarial, their role is to be loyal spokespeople to those powerful factions that they pretend to exercise oversight.”

He referred to these journalists as “very, very brave” in their condemnation of a man who’s already being condemned and marginalized by the entire Washington establishment, only to then turn around and not dare take on the government in the same way.

“You will be hard-pressed to find even a single one of those brave, intrepid journalists ever even think about, let alone express the idea, that director of national intelligence James Clapper ought to be subject to the rule of law.”

Read more: –In democracies, public surveillance must be debated by public – Snowden

Greenwald told the computer enthusiasts that he believed it was private initiatives like this – not political reform – that would help secure people’s privacy in the future.

“Ultimately, the battle over Internet freedom – the question of whether or not the Internet will really be this tool of liberation and democratization, or whether it will become the worst tool of human oppression in all of human history – will be fought out, I think, primarily on the technological battlefield,” Greenwald said. “The NSA and the US government know that: That’s why [NSA Director] Keith Alexander gets dressed up in his little costumes – his Dad jeans and edgy black shirt – and goes to hacker conferences.”

Snowden associate announced that the leaks would continue: “There are a lot more stories to come, a lot more documents that will be covered. It’s important that we understand what it is we’re publishing, so what we say about them is accurate.”

Greenwald called for countries like Germany, France or Brazil to give asylum to Snowden, who is on a temporary asylum in Russia.

“For Germany or Brazil to defy the United States, there is a cost to that. But there was even greater cost to Edward Snowden to come forward in defense of your rights, and he did it anyway,” Greenwald said. “They have an ethical and moral obligation to do what he did for them, which is to protect his rights.”

You can listen to the recording of the speech here.

Voice of Russia, Reuters, mediaite.com, Deutsche Welle

Photo: EPA Former US spy agency contractor Edward Snowden has more secrets to reveal that relate to Israel, the journalist who first brought his leaks to the world’s attention said.
