WASHINGTON, Feb. 10. 2012 The U.S. Defense Department on the basis of several classified studies has concluded that a number of points of a phased plan to deploy a missile defense system contains serious flaws. They question the overall effectiveness of future missile defense system, said on Saturday the AP news agency.<\/p>\n
It become known to him in the the briefing, arranged for members of the U.S. Congress by members of his chief auditing body – the Office of Government Accountability. This briefing has been prepared on the basis of the mentioned internal research, which, according to the AP, the\u00a0 ABM Agency conducted in Pentagon.\u00a0 The Office of Government Accountability is now its own public report on the subject.<\/p>\n
According to the AP, Agency experts on missile defense, in particular, found that Romania is far not the best place to host U.S. missile interceptors. In addition, the deployment of U.S. missiles in Poland will make sense only if they are modified and designed to intercept in the boost phase of flight, determined the Missile Defense Agency. Meanwhile, the U.S. government is not working to establish an interceptor for use on the booster stage of the flight, considering this idea unfeasible.<\/p>\n
The problem is not solved by stationing the missile interceptors on ships, noted the AP. The proposals to position the ships in the North Sea can only exacerbate differences over missile defense with Moscow, as in this case, the interceptors will be actually on the path of potential trajectory of missiles from Russia and thus reinforces the notion that its orientation is against its potential strategic deterrence.<\/p>\n
“Adaptable phased approach” to missile defense system was declared the Obama administration in September 2009. In accordance with its decision, the U.S. missile defense architecture in Europe will be created in four phases. On the ground – in the period to 2011 – in the Mediterranean Sea were deployed ships equipped with multi-purpose anti-aircraft missile systems “Aegis” and interceptor missiles “Standard-3” \/ “es-em-3” \/, placed defense radar in Turkey.<\/p>\n
On the second – in 2015 – is scheduled to transfer mobile battery with missiles “Es-em-3” on the territory of Romania.<\/p>\n
Then – in 2018 – they are to be deployed in Poland.<\/p>\n
And by 2020, it is planned to replace the missiles with a more sophisticated ones, which are able to protect the entire territory of NATO members, not only from the intermediate-and shorter-range missiles, but also ICBMs.<\/p>\n
The criticism of the plans was brought up in September last year, at the National Research Council. This organization is part of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA. It has prepared the report at the request of Congress, urging the U.S. government essentially to correct the plans of the missile defense system and, in particular, to give up the implementation of its final stage.<\/p>\n
In Moscow this stage “is regarded as a very serious risk to the Russian strategic deterrent,” as it was pointed out by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in March 2012 .<\/p>\n
Russian representatives have declared on several occasions, that if NATO will go ahead with stationing the missile defense shield, which will endanger the Russian strategic arsenal and herewith will be a threat to strategic balance in the world, the Russian Federation will react accordingly with stationing more advanced offensive systems to overcome the missile defense shield.<\/p>\n
