Moscow will promote preservation of Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty – Putin

Moscow will promote the preservation of Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin told a press conference in Sochi on the Russian Black Sea coast after his talks with South African President Jacob Zuma.

Putin provided assurances that Russia would continue its struggle for the settlement of the Syrian crisis as soon as possible without  outside interference.

Russia and South Africa have reached agreement on the further coordination of efforts aimed at the peaceful settlement of the Syrian crisis, Putin said stressing that Russia and South Africa are acting in cooperation in international agencies, including their interaction in the Syria settlement.

On that list are the BRICS group which unites Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and the G20 Group.

Negotiating teams needed before conference on Syria – Lavrov

Prior to the second Geneva conference on Syria a negotiating team should be formed representing all opposition forces, except for terrorist groups said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov commenting on the developing situation before the conference.

Minister Lavrov stated that in contrast to the government of Syria, which has made positive statements in response to Russian, and now American, initiatives for a political dialogue, the opposition did not, and spoke in vague terms, saying that in principle they would welcome any initiative that could stop the violence, but first Bashar Assad should “disappear.”

The Foreign Minister said that “realism and concern for the interests of the Syrian people demand a speedy end to violence without any preconditions.” He believes that “any pre-conditions will only delay this vicious cycle of bloodshed.”
