Vladimir Putin, Russian President (speaking Russian) answers a question regarding monitoring of foreign NGO’s (Foreign Nongovernmental Organizations):

28.3 billion rubles have been wired (to NGOs) from overseas. That’s almost a billion US dollars. And that is only within four months. This unavoidably raises some questions. Our society has every right to know where this money is coming from and for what purposes. As for the freedom of these organizations (NGOs) to operate, they are in no way restricted or infringed upon. I would like to emphasize that the only thing they are asked to do is get registered.

We could use this money – a billion dollars is a lot of money – to help nations in difficult situations such as Cyprus – and avoid the ripping off of unlucky bank depositors. Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel held a joint press conference on Monday summing up Putin’s visit to Germany.

During his speech, Putin argued that Russian authorities are not trying to close any non-governmental organizations financed from abroad.

“Our society has every right to know where this money is coming from and for what purposes. As for the freedom of these organizations (NGOs) to operate, they are in no way restricted or infringed upon. I would like to emphasize that the only thing they are asked to do is get registered. We could use this money – a billion dollars is a lot of money – to help nations in difficult situations such as Cyprus – and avoid the ripping off of unlucky bank depositors”, he said.
