More than twenty leading Russian defense companies are participating in the Langkawi Intl Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition, LIMA-2013, which opened on March 26 in Malaysia.

Russia presents a wide range of military equipment, warships and boats, and elements of anti-missile defense. This exhibition means a lot to Russia’s arms export agency Rosoboronexport. The country has been a regular participant in this arms show since 1991, the company’s spokesman Vyacheslav Davidenko told the VoR.

“Russia played a crucial part in helping LIMA become the largest arms show in the Asia-Pacific region and a platform for military cooperation between nations. This time we offer the visitors the chance to see our latest Su-35 multirole fighter, the Yak-130 jet trainer, the Mi-28 attack helicopter, the Ka-50 single-seat attack helicopter, and the Mi-26 heavy transport helicopter. We also have a multimedia pavilion to demonstrate Russia’s latest achievements in military shipbuilding: the Gepard-class frigate, the “Mirage” and ‘Sobol” patrol boats. The visitors to the Russian pavilion will also see the new generation Buk M2M anti-missile defense elements and the Pantsir-S1 surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery weapon system. Traditionally Russia has strong positions in this niche of the defence industry.”

Russia and Malaysia have been long-time partners in terms of military-technical cooperation. In 1994 Malaysia purchased 18 Russian MiG-29 aircraft as part of a deal that gave a boost to Russian arms exports. Unlike China, India or Algeria, Malaysia has never been Russia’s traditional partner and for quite a long time relied on arms supplies from the West. But in the 200s the countries signed a deal to buy 18 Russian Su-30 aircraft. “Russia relies much on the defense market of the South-Eastern Asia, including Malaysia. – says Ivan Konovalov, director of the Center for Strategic Environment. – We`ve been cooperating on regular basis with several countries: Vietnam, India, Malaysia and Indonesia. That is why the LIMA arms show is definitely a strategically important event of its kind. Aircraft usually attract most attention during such exhibitions. Russian attack aircraft, first of all Su-30, are very popular in South-Eastern Asia.”

Russia’s Udaloy-class destroyer, the Marshal Shaposhnikov, has arrived at Langkawi to stay there under the Russian flag until the arms show runs through March 30. The exhibition’s program also features the performance by the Russian Knights aerobatic team.
