Meeting with Russian Sinologists was the last event of the state visit to Russia, President of China.

According to Xi, the exchange with Russian experts on China was a good end of the visit.

Xi Jinping said in his opening remarks:

“This is the last event of my visit to Russia, and I very much looking forward to the event. You devote yourselves to the development of relations and friendship between China and Russia, and on behalf of the Chinese government and people I am expressing my sincere respect.”

Xi: “The results of his visit to Russia exceeded expectations” Xi Jinping told MGIMO students about friendship and dreams.

In conversation with Xi Jinping attended 12 China experts. They were leading research and training centers in Moscow – Diplomatic Academy, Institute of Asia and Africa, the Far East Institute of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, Russian University of Peoples’ Friendship. China scholars were also present, working in the Russian media, among them was presented and “Voice of Russia” , which since 1940 broadcasts in Chinese.

The topics of conversation were not preset in advance. It seemed to reflect the style of Xi Jinping – his desire for a free communication. As explained by the “Voice of Russia” a source relevant to the preparation of the visit, a meeting in this format was in the state visits by Chinese leaders to Russia for the first time. It was specially organized on their own, to allow for the direct exchange of views.

Hu listened intently, occasionally making notes on a pad, always maintaining a friendly smile on his face. Summing up the discussion, he noted that the Russian school of Chinese Studies is one of the leading positions in the world and it was very interesting to talk to Russian leading sinologists.

At the meeting was a bright private moment.

Of particular interest to the story of Xi Jinping was principal researcher of the Institute of the Far East Lyudmila Boni, who in 1959 worked as an interpreter with his father, who came to the Soviet Union, led the government delegation. Although at the time the current Chairman of the China was only six years old, he remembers the photos taken during the visit to the USSR.

Unfortunately, during the Cultural Revolution, all photos were destroyed, but the memory of that trip were souvenirs are stored in the house of his mother, told Xi.

At the meeting there were the leading researcher of the Institute of International Studies, MGIMO,

Ambassador Vitaly Vorobiev, who at one time also met with the father of Xi Jinping.

Vitaly Vorobiev:

“If there is something in common in the nature of the two politicians that took Xi from his father?” – these questions were asked veteran diplomacy after the meeting.

“Xi said, correctly, his father has brought him up. And then he heard today a lot from him personally, we realized that a lot comes from childhood, from his youth, from their parents. This concerns the for example work ethics. Xi Jinping – is a man of the wide world, profoundly knowledgeable and with  wide experience. His biography is not a biography of a civil servant, rather it is a biography of a complex life, rich in events. And one can feel that each episode of a life is enriching a person, we take always for yourself, so with Xi”- said Vorobyov.

Vitaly Vorobyov mentioned, that these meetings mean a lot for him as an expert on China, as it allows to provide better understanding of the “fifth generation” of Chinese leaders.

How did Vitaly Vorobyov seen Xi Jinping?

“We see a very promising relations, quite humane and friendly person. We did not see in him a person elevated above others, of course, we understand what level he was. But at the same time he hears the people, and not just listens, and this is a very important quality for a leader, “- said the expert.

Xi appeared to the audience as deeply educated man. In particular, China’s President mentioned a long list of Russian and Soviet classics, which he read and reread. He knows and loves the creativity of Tolstoy, Turgenev, Chekhov, Dostoevsky. Among the favorite Russian poets – Pushkin. Three years ago during a visit to Russia, he had a special visit Tsarkoselsky high school near St. Petersburg, where he studied Pushkin.

Talking with Chinese President, the correspondent of “Voice of Russia” reminded him that he himself is no stranger to Xi belles letters. While working in Zhejiang, Xi published a short essay in the newspaper “Zhejiang Daily”. Xi smiled and said it was small and was published under a pseudonym. Meanwhile, it was evident that he was pleased working in journalism, and especially pleased that this fact of his biography is well known in Russia.

The only restriction on these meetings is time. However, despite the fact that for the Xi Jinpings conversation with to the sinologists one hour was allotted, chat lasted a half hour longer. And it was clear that Xi Jinping sees the meeting not as just point of the program: For him the conversation with Russian scholars and journalists working in China was really important, same as important are the relationship between the two countries.
